Fibromyalgia Treatment

Author: Max Bellamy

One of the most prevalent disorders in the United States today is Fibromyalgia. More than three million Americans are found to have Fibromyalgia, and most of them are women. This is a chronic condition that is characterized by aching of the muscles and ligaments, over fatigue, headache, and sleeping disturbances among others.

Fibromyalgia is not as frightening as cancer since it does not progress into a serious ailment, and it can be easily treated. The treatment of Fibromyalgia is focused on improving the health of the person and minimizing the symptoms, especially sleeping disorder, which is believed to cause the occurrence of other symptoms.

Doctors first treat Fibromyalgia patients through medication. To promote sleep, antidepressant drugs are given to the patient. This type of drug helps increase levels of serotonin in the brain and thus prevents sleeplessness.

To ease the pain at the back of the neck, the elbows, the knees, the chest, and other parts of the head and the body, analgesic drugs are given. These drugs can be bought without prescription and so the patient can effectively treat his muscle pains even without going to a doctor. Muscle relaxants, which are usually taken at bedtime, are also prescribed by doctors to relieve muscle pain and prevent spasms.

Patients with severe Fibromyalgia and those suffering other symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and frequent mood changes are usually advised to undergo cognitive-behavioral therapy and other treatment programs that combine different kinds of treatment.

Having a disease or a disorder can be quite upsetting, but it's not as upsetting as it was before when little information was available and methods of treatment were limited. With today's modern equipment and advancements in medicine, even cancer patients have good chances of overcoming their ordeal.

So if you have Fibromyalgia, be positive. Stress is a great factor that influences the recurrence of the symptoms, especially pain, fatigue, and sleeplessness. Live a healthy life and avoid activities that are too exhausting. A simple change in lifestyle can help.
