Office Workstations

Author: Richard Romando

One of the prime problems in today's data centers and offices is that of space. With ever-expanding scales, it is imperative for office areas to be space efficient, economically designed, and yet provide a good working environment. This is where the concept of office workstations comes in. Office workstations allow you to divide your office into semi-private work areas without building permanent structures. Due to their flexibility and modularity, a wide range of layouts are possible while meeting all the workspace requirements of the employees. Well modeled and laid out workstations can often assist employees in achieving a higher degree of efficiency and productivity.

Purchasing office workstations isn't as easy as purchasing furniture from a store or a catalog. These workstations are designed to last for decades and are often expensive. The cost of a complete modular office workstation could range from $1500 and up for a used workstations to $2500 and up for a new workstation. It is important to work closely with the dealer to make the right purchase decision.

Before approaching suppliers of office workstations you need to do some homework.

You need to get the floor plans of the office space where the workstations are to be installed. If the floor plans are not available, you should measure the approximate dimensions of the space yourself to get a basic idea of the available space. In most cases you will end up working with a designer but it's good to have an idea of the available space while approaching the suppliers.

You also need to talk to your employees and find out their requirements. The design of the workstation depends to a large extent on the work being done. The workstation for telemarketers could be vastly different compared to workstations for programmers. A specific group of employees might spend more time doing paperwork and might need to interact frequently with other employees whereas another group might work mostly on computers with limited interaction. Office-wide considerations such as shared printers and copiers must be kept in mind as well. Workstation design must consider all these requirements.

Purchase of office workstations is not a quick process. Depending on the availability of the workstations you choose, it might take anywhere between two to ten weeks to install these.
